Mountain Peak 7                                           3.5″ x 2.5″ pastel by Richichi

Small works were a hit at RiverWinds Gallery in Sept. so more are now available.  These are great for new collectors.  You can see in the photo below a row of nine trading card sized paintings. The frames are painted in acrylic to expand the piece. These can be grouped as shown, as three separate triptychs or  hung (acquired) individually.  You can also commission them to be painted larger. The series of Mountain Peaks were inspired when Linda was flying in a helicopter over Maui and on various mountain peaks in the Hudson Valley.  Arrive at the opening on March 9th from 3-6 pm at New Century Artist Gallery , 530 West 25th Street , Suite 406 in NYC  first to select yours. Red dots are expected.

In keeping with the theme of collecting art for Le$$,

the race to the gallery has begun to be the first to see new work

by the artists. Both Mary Ann Glass and I already have had

visitors to the gallery who have made their early bird selections.

Red dots are becoming common again to the delight of all concerned.

When you have found that special piece that speaks to your heart,

don’t delay, find the gallery owner or the artist and simply tell them “add a red

dot for me for…(name the piece or point it out to them). You can take

care of the sale after you are finished enjoying the evening. If you

wait, you might find someone else has grabbed the exact one you

want.

The Happiness Chakra Pendant Line by Linda Richichi and Peggy Santangelo Landrum

(who is a wonderful ceramic artist).  Women are loving these one of a kind

ceramic pendents designed to raise your vibration in each chakra.  They are also

collectable and can be hung on the wall!  These are going fast so come early!

This one never got displayed. As soon as I pinned it to the display, it was sold and gone.

Unframed and waiting for a home

1. Visit the artist’s studio and look for unframed, hidden gems.

(Call or email for an appointment if you know the artist). If not,

the artist may want to meet you when they have Open Studio. Ask and they will happily tell you what

works for them.

Many artists welcome feedback. A quick studio visit doesn’t take away from the artist’s schedule.

Ask to see the box, bin, shelf, file of unframed works. Then make an offer on a piece you love.

First ask what a framed piece in the same size goes for so you can determine a price range.

Chances are there is a reason it is not framed up.  A piece  may not have fit into any body of work ready

to be exhibited.  Or if you are not comfortable making an offer, ask what the plans are for the piece first.

2.  Ask for “retired pieces”. These are works of art that have already made the gallery rounds.

For some reason they did not sell. The right collector may not have seen them or they may not

have been exhibited in a good spot, etc. For whatever reason,  once back in the studio,

the artist places these pieces in the pile of paintings already exhibited. Many of these pieces can be had for

le$$ because they have already made the rounds and they are considered “retired”.

I have collected many works of art by some of my

favorite artists (when I was still learning). This is a great way for artists to get better- study from

the works in your own collection that  your favorite artist(s) painted.  If you take an art class from an artist ( and you love their work),

ask if they offer a student discount on demo pieces.  I’ve learned soooo much by studying the original at home.

Richichi's Mandalas for Birthing Center at Orange Regional Medical Center

More tips to Collect Art Within Your Budget (con’t)

1. When hanging art over your couch, size doesn’t matter. 

Here is a grouping of smaller works created just for the Orange County Regional

Medical Center’s Birthing Center that fills the space beautifully. While this grouping

is of similar images, a mixture of styles, mediums and artists adds interest.

Find smaller originals in the artist’s bin at the opening and frame it the way you like it

and save money.   Many framers have frame specials if the original is a standard size- 5″ x 7″,

8″ x 10″, 11″ x 14″.

2. Artist Demo’s are priced much less than a finished piece.

When an artist conducts a lesson for students, a quick demo is often created. Usually these are

small and very loose. Perfect for those of you who love a more abstract look. Realize that

not every piece is successful. Many of the great artists threw away their mistakes, studies and

attempts. So do I . I only keep the ones I am proud to write my name on. Here is one that I

really am pleased with..

*How  to collect fine art  

 WITHIN YOUR BUDGET 

Over the next few weeks, I’ll discuss types of collectors

and what they are looking for.

The first type of collector:

The beginner who is Budget savvy–

*You love art and hope to own an original.

In the meantime,

you pick up postcards, posters and prints.

But, did you know there are ways

for you to start collecting originals now?                                                  

The wait is over; start real small buying originals,

say $ 50–$80, 100 & up.

It is about the cost of a dinner out for two.

These make great gifts, too!

Rather than buying from large shopping stores who offer

massed produced cheap quality materials, be unique.

Find a half dozen exceptional artists whose work you love.

These smallest pieces are a much better value for your money -

department store  prints retain no value.

Watch your collection grow over time with pride 

and then create a large cluster piece. 

Start small with mini originals

 

What is the secret to finding these pieces?

1. When you receive notice from your favorite artist about an

       opening visit the gallery before the artist’s reception. Look for small

       pieces you love before they are claimed on opening night.

2. Then hang them on a tiny wall to start off so the first one isn’t lonely.

      As you collect more over time arrange them

        in a cluster.  When you have many, show off your

         fine art collection that has value in a larger area !

Sunflowers Galore

While the artists work (yes, we call this work) to capture the beauty of the field of sunflowers with

the olive trees growing in the middle, the mid day lunch is being prepared back at the villa.
